The Human Body and EMF

The human body uses electromagnetic fields to function properly. In fact, research has demonstrated that every cell in your body may have its own EMF. In his book “The Body Electric,” researcher and author Robert Becker demonstrates that our cells actually communicate with each other via bioelectrical signals and electromagnetic fields. These natural EMFs help regulate important biochemical processes of all kinds. Maintaining balance in those cellular electromagnetic fields is crucial to your physical health.

The healthy human body resonates at about 10 Hz. The externally created EMFs of most concern are those that are very strong, near the body and those that are high frequency. External EMFs can change the frequency of your body's electromagnetic fields through a process called entrainment (or sympathetic resonance). Entrainment is the tendency of an object to vibrate at the same frequency as something outside of it. In other words, powerful artificial EMFs overwhelm your body’s own electrical fields, changing their frequency and distorting the balance of the body's electromagnetic field and its communication systems. This creates imbalance and dis-ease.

In addition, there is increased evidence that ongoing and escalated exposure to EMFs can also result in electrohypersensitivity with a broad range of symptoms that are listed below.

Research on EMF

In 2007, an international working group of leading scientists, researchers and health policy professionals published the BioInitiative Report on the spectrum of electromagnetism and related health effects after reviewing thousands of studies from around the world. In particular it was noted that EMF:

  • Affects the body's immune functions
  • Induces stress response
  • Affects neurology and behavior
  • Is strongly related to cancers such as leukemia in children
  • Impacts melatonin production (which is related to Alzheimer's Disease and Breast Cancer)

Another major review of research resulted in the European Union Parliament Electromagnetic Report and Resolution entitled: European Parliament Resolution on health concerns associated with electromagnetic fields, that was adopted February 17, 2009 with 29 recommendations many with respect to EMFs and the related electrohypersensitivity.

A more recent resource and review of research can be found in The Bioinitiative Report 2012 which also has links to more recent studies and summaries of research.

Electro Hypersensitivity and EMF

Electrohypersensitivity (EHS) is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as "...a phenomenon where individuals experience adverse health effects while in the vicinity of devices emanating electric, magnetic, or electromagnetic fields.” In particular, the following list of symptoms have been cited in various studies as being related to EHS.
